It is a common belief that herpes simplex virus 1 strain causes herpes symptoms above the waist and strain 2 causes symptoms below waist, which isn't true. HSV 1 and HSV 2 are often observed to cause herpes symptoms above the waist and below the waist respectively but both can cause herpes outbreak at opposite sites also i.e. against the common belief. Giving your partner oral sex with an active cold sore can give him genital herpes and vice versa.
